Seven Detained in Indonesia Over Plot to Attack Pope Francis

Indonesian police have detained seven individuals in connection with a foiled plot to attack Pope Francis. The Pope, who is on a 12-day visit to the Asia-Pacific region, completed the first leg of his journey with his visit to Indonesia on Friday. According to “The Straits Times,” citing a media statement from Indonesia’s national police’s counter-terrorism unit, Detachment 88, the suspects were arrested in Bogor and Bekasi, near Jakarta.

Detachment 88 spokesperson Ashwin Siregar indicated that the investigation is still ongoing, and it remains unclear whether the detainees are known to each other or if they are members of the same terrorist group. Siregar mentioned that information about the suspects was received from the public through a monitoring system. Most of the arrests took place on Monday and Tuesday. A source told “The Straits Times” that one of the detainees had their home searched, and it was reported that this individual was allegedly plotting an attack on Pope Francis. The Pope’s visit to Jakarta was from Tuesday to Friday.
