Pope Francis criticized both U.S. presidential candidates for their stances on abortion and immigration, urging American Catholics to choose the “lesser evil” in the upcoming election.
During an airborne press conference while returning to Rome from an Asian tour, the Pope was asked for advice for Catholic voters. He highlighted both candidates’ opposition to life—whether it be rejecting migrants or supporting abortion.
Although Francis did not mention Donald Trump or Kamala Harris by name, he condemned their positions on migration and abortion, two issues central to the Catholic Church. He emphasized that migration is a right according to Scripture, and those who do not welcome migrants are committing a grave sin. Regarding abortion, the Pope bluntly stated, “To have an abortion is to kill a human being.”
When asked how Catholics should vote, Francis responded that they should exercise their civic duty, but should vote for the lesser of two evils. “Who is the lesser evil? The woman or the man? I don’t know,” he said, leaving the choice up to individual consciences.
While Francis has frequently spoken out on immigration and supports the Church’s pro-life stance, he has not stressed doctrine as much as his predecessors. His comments come as U.S. bishops maintain that abortion is a priority issue for Catholic voters. Kamala Harris has defended abortion rights, and Trump has taken a tough stance on migration, including his plans for deportations.
This is not the first time Pope Francis has weighed in on U.S. elections. In 2016, he criticized Trump’s border wall plan, suggesting that building walls is “not Christian.”
Other Remarks by the Pope:
- Notre Dame Cathedral: Francis denied rumors that he would attend the December inauguration of the restored Notre Dame Cathedral.
- Visit to Argentina: The Pope addressed speculation about returning to Argentina, but confirmed no final decision has been made.
- China: Francis called China “a promise and a hope” for the Catholic Church and expressed a desire to visit one day.
- Sexual Abuse: He condemned sexual abuse as “demonic” and commented on recent revelations involving a renowned French priest.
