The mother of the 14-year-old charged with the recent fatal shooting at a Georgia high school reportedly alerted the school about an “extreme emergency” shortly before the attack. Marcee Gray, mother of Colt Gray, made a phone call to Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on the morning of the incident, according to the Washington Post.
Gray’s call, placed around 9:50 a.m., was made approximately 30 minutes before the shooting began. She informed a school counselor that her son should be located immediately. The details of her warning have not been fully disclosed, but Gray has mentioned that she shared more information with law enforcement. She has expressed deep regret over the tragic events and the impact on the victims and their families.
Following the call, a school administrator checked Colt Gray’s math class, but he was not present, according to reports from another student.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the inquiry, has referred media inquiries to the Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. The office has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Colt Gray faces charges as an adult, including four counts of murder. Additionally, his father, Colin Gray, is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children. This case represents an effort to hold parents accountable for providing minors with access to firearms used in attacks.
Prosecutors allege that Colin Gray supplied the weapon used in the shooting. Earlier in May 2023, both Colin and Colt Gray were investigated by neighboring county authorities for online threats related to a potential school shooting. The investigation concluded with no evidence linking them to the threats, and both denied having any connection to the incident.
