In a push for higher wages, workers at Samsung Electronics’ plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, have initiated an indefinite strike, impacting production at the factory. The plant, which manufactures refrigerators and washing machines, employs nearly 2,000 workers. On Monday, production was partly affected as a significant number of employees did not report for work.
E. Muthukumar, the head of the Samsung India union, confirmed the strike, with many workers gathering outside the plant in their uniforms, calling for better wages and improved working conditions. He stated that the strike will continue without specifying an end date.
The disruption follows a similar strike in South Korea by Samsung’s largest union in August, where workers also sought higher wages and bonuses.
A Samsung India spokesperson assured that the company is working to address workers’ concerns and is committed to complying with all regulations. The company is also taking steps to ensure minimal disruption for consumers.
The Sriperumbudur plant, operational since 2007, is one of two factories Samsung runs in India, with the other located in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where smartphones are produced. The ongoing strike comes just before the festive season in India, a critical time for electronic sales. To manage the production shortfall, Samsung has brought in contract workers.
