Trinamool Congress MP Jawhar Sircar has issued a stern ultimatum, threatening to resign from Parliament over the handling of the recent rape-murder case in Kolkata, which has ignited widespread protests across the country. In a poignant open letter addressed to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sircar criticized the government’s response to the tragic incident and alleged corruption within the ruling party.
The controversy centers around a rape-murder case that has shocked the nation and triggered a massive wave of protests. Sircar’s letter, which comes on the day of a significant statewide protest and a planned global chain of demonstrations by the Bengali diaspora, reflects his deep dissatisfaction with the government’s actions.
Sircar accused the government of a “too little, too late” approach in responding to the public outrage and criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress for what he described as unchecked corruption. He recalled that his previous concerns about corruption, specifically regarding the former education minister, were dismissed and met with hostility from senior party leaders.
“I did not resign then as I had hoped that you would carry on your public campaign against ‘cut money’ and corruption that you had started a year earlier,” Sircar wrote, expressing disappointment in the lack of progress and intervention from the Chief Minister.
Sircar’s letter underscores a broader discontent among protesters and citizens who feel that the government has failed to act decisively. He highlighted that the movement against the rape-murder case is as much a protest against the state’s governance and the ruling party’s corruption as it is about the crime itself.
He also expressed frustration with the government’s delayed response and inadequate measures, despite recent announcements of a Rs 100-crore plan to enhance women’s safety. This plan includes the establishment of fast-track and POCSO courts, increased police presence, and enhanced surveillance through CCTV and improved lighting.
Sircar’s threat to resign adds a new dimension to the ongoing crisis, indicating significant internal discord within the Trinamool Congress and mounting pressure on the state government to address both public safety and governance issues.
