NEW DELHI: As West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faces mounting pressure over the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, TMC leader and MP Shatrughan Sinha has stepped up to defend her. Amid calls for Banerjee’s resignation, Sinha argued that holding any Chief Minister accountable for such crimes is unjust.
In his remarks, Sinha drew a parallel to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that if resignations were the standard response to such incidents, Modi would also need to resign over violence in Manipur and the Hathras and Unnao rape cases, which occurred under BJP-ruled states.
Sinha described the August 9 incident in Kolkata as “very shocking and disgusting” and expressed his support for the protesting doctors. He praised Banerjee for her introduction of the ‘Aparajita Bill,’ calling it “historic” and urged both the Governor and the Centre to support and pass the bill.
Sinha’s defense of Banerjee comes as political tensions rise. Earlier in the day, TMC MP Jawhar Sircar resigned from the Rajya Sabha and exited politics in protest over the case. Sircar’s resignation letter urged Banerjee to take decisive action to address the crisis.
Nationwide protests have erupted in response to the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, demanding stricter laws for women’s safety. The case has sparked widespread outrage and calls for urgent reforms.
