The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has informed a special court that former Principal Sandeep Ghosh of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital established ‘criminal contacts’ and colluded with other co-accused to secure ‘undue benefits’.
These charges are made in the context of CBI’s investigation into corruption at RG Kar. Ghosh was removed from his position as Principal on August 9, following the case of the rape and murder of an intern, for which a city police voluntary worker named Sanjay Roy has been accused. The CBI is also investigating the doctor’s case.
On September 3, the CBI presented its charges in the Alipore Special Court, where Ghosh, along with three other accused—Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afzar Ali—was brought before the court. The CBI informed the court that two vendors working at Murshidabad Medical College (Singha and Hazra) gained benefits through contracts at the hospital.
The CBI also alleged that Ghosh provided special benefits to his security assistant Afzar Ali.
“The contract was for running a café within the RG Kar campus. The contract was signed between the hospital and M/S Ishan Café. Nargis Khanam, wife of Afzar Ali Khan, owns this firm, but Afzar Ali Khan manages all the operations of the firm. M/S Ishan Café was awarded the contract in the predetermined manner, as it was the only firm among four bidders meeting the technical criteria,” the court was informed.
The CBI is now also investigating Afzar Ali’s role, including a case involving the alleged sale of biomedical waste.
