Kolkata Rape-Murder Case Sandeep Ghosh Awarded Contracts to Close Associates

Former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, currently in CBI judicial custody, has been implicated in new revelations of financial and administrative irregularities. According to CBI sources, Ghosh allegedly ran a “criminal nexus” involving his close associates, including a guard and two medicine vendors.

On September 7, CBI officials disclosed that apart from Ghosh, three other individuals were arrested in connection with financial misconduct. Two of the accused, Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra, were vendors closely linked to Ghosh. Both were awarded contracts by RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Suman Hazra, a medical vendor, was awarded contracts for supplying sofas and refrigerators, even though, by regulation, he was only supposed to supply medicines. Furthermore, Ghosh awarded the contract for operating a café at the hospital to an organization connected to the wife of his personal security guard.

Ghosh, along with three others, was arrested on September 2 over corruption charges related to financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College.

CBI Investigation Reveals Three Key Findings:

  1. Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra were previously associated with Murshidabad Medical College, where Ghosh also served between 2016 and 2018. After Ghosh became the principal of RG Kar Medical College, both Singha and Hazra were awarded several contracts. Hazra’s business reportedly tripled between 2021-22 after associating with Ghosh.
  2. Biplab Singha operated several firms, including Maa Tara Traders, Baba Loknath, and Tiyasha Enterprises, some of which were run by his friends and relatives. He used these firms to apply for tenders at the hospital, creating the appearance of competition. In the end, one of his firms would always be awarded the tender.
  3. CBI also found irregularities in the process of awarding tenders to Biplab’s firms. Work orders were written to several college officials but were never actually delivered, indicating that other officials were deliberately excluded from the tender process.

Medical Council Issues Notice to Ghosh:

On Saturday, the West Bengal Medical Council issued a show-cause notice to Sandeep Ghosh, seeking an explanation regarding the financial irregularities in healthcare services. He has been given three days to respond. The council has indicated that serious financial misconduct could lead to the cancellation of his medical registration, but he has been given the chance to defend himself.

CBI Uncovers Renovation Order Post Crime:

On September 5, the CBI uncovered evidence showing that Sandeep Ghosh ordered renovation work the day after the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The doctor’s body was discovered on the morning of August 9 near the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College. Documents indicate that Ghosh wrote to the Public Works Department (PWD) on August 10, ordering the renovation of rooms and toilets adjacent to the seminar hall. His signature was found on the permission letter.

Investigators suggest that the urgency with which Ghosh ordered the renovation may link the financial irregularities at the college with the rape-murder case.
