Jawhar Sircar, a 72-year-old bureaucrat-turned-politician, has announced his resignation from both the Rajya Sabha and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), citing his discontent with the handling of the recent crisis in West Bengal. In a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sircar criticized the state government’s response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Sircar alleged that the transfer of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, was not a proper disciplinary action but rather a reward that fueled public outrage. This incident, he claimed, ignited a “people’s movement” against the administration’s mishandling of the case. Sircar expressed frustration that internal party concerns are often overlooked and that drastic measures are necessary to draw attention to critical issues.
The tragic incident on August 9, where a trainee doctor was found raped and murdered, has intensified scrutiny of the hospital administration and the Kolkata police. Sanjay Roy has been arrested in connection with the crime, but the responses of the hospital and police have been heavily criticized.
Sircar stated that his resignation is a reflection of his dissatisfaction with the political handling of the crisis. He emphasized that his concerns were not about political rivalries but about addressing genuine public grievances. He believes that dismissing the people’s movement as merely a political maneuver is misplaced.
The recent developments have sparked widespread debate and criticism, highlighting ongoing issues within the state government and the political response to the crisis.
