The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the rape and murder of a junior doctor and alleged financial irregularities at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has informed the special court that its investigation has revealed that the then Principal, Sandip Ghosh, had “criminal connections” with other co-accused and had “unlawfully benefited” from these relationships.
The CBI reported to the court that Ghosh, who was previously posted at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, maintained business ties with two vendors, Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra, even after moving to Kolkata and awarded contracts at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital to them.
Additionally, the agency alleged that a firm owned by the wife of Ghosh’s security aide was also awarded a cafeteria contract at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
These allegations were presented by the CBI in a special court on September 3, where Ghosh, along with Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Officer Ali, was brought before the court. All four are currently in CBI custody.
The investigation also revealed that Ghosh had maintained business relationships with Biplab Singha during his tenure at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. Even when Ghosh moved to Kolkata National Medical College and Hospital, Singha and Hazra continued to be in contact with him. After Ghosh’s transfer to R G Kar Medical College, he brought these vendors to the institution, where they continued to supply goods.
The CBI told the court that M/s Ma Tara Traders, a firm owned by Biplab Singha, and M/s Hazra Medical, were awarded several contracts with Ghosh’s assistance. Particularly, Hazra Medical received contracts for medical equipment and other supplies, and the firm’s business grew threefold between 2021 and 2022.
The investigation also uncovered that Ghosh extended benefits to his security aide, Officer Ali. A cafeteria contract awarded to a firm run by Ali’s wife was granted through a specified process, where only one eligible firm met the technical criteria.
The CBI is now examining Officer Ali’s role, particularly concerning the sale of biomedical waste.
