Bomb Attack on Former Manipur Chief Minister’s Residence Results in Elderly Man’s Death

On Friday, militants targeted the residence of former Manipur Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng in the Moirang area of Bishnupur district with a bomb attack. The attack resulted in the death of an elderly man and left five others injured. Earlier in the day, a rocket-propelled bomb attack was carried out in the lower residential area of Tronglaobi. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties from this incident.

According to official reports, the rocket attack was aimed at the former chief minister’s residence while an elderly man was preparing for religious ceremonies. The explosion resulted in his immediate death. The blast also injured five others, including a 13-year-old girl. The residence of Mairembam Koireng is located about two kilometers from the INA headquarters, where on April 14, 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Shaukat Ali of the Indian National Army (INA) raised the Indian tricolor for the first time on Indian soil under the guidance of INA’s supreme commander, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

In a related development, thousands of people from the Imphal Valley’s five districts formed a human chain on Friday to protest recent drone and gun attacks in Manipur. During the demonstration, two civilians were killed and twelve others were injured. The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts to address the ongoing violence in the state.
