During the ‘Jivitputrika’ festival, also known locally as Jitiya, a tragic series of incidents in Bihar has led to 43 people drowning, including 37 children. Additionally, three others are reported missing. These incidents occurred across 15 different districts in Bihar.
The ‘Jivitputrika’ festival involves women fasting without water for the long life and good health of their children (sons and daughters), followed by sacred bathing. This festival is prominently celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and the eastern regions of Uttar Pradesh.
According to a statement from the Disaster Management Department (DMD), “So far, a total of 43 bodies have been recovered, and search operations are ongoing.”
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a compensation of four lakh rupees for the families of the deceased. The government stated that the process of disbursing this compensation has begun, and eight families have already received the funds.
The drowning incidents have been reported in the districts of East and West Champaran, Nalanda, Aurangabad, Kaimur, Buxar, Siwan, Rohtas, Saran, Patna, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Gopalganj, and Arwal.
