Kolkata – The tragic murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata has ignited a storm of controversy and protest, as her parents accuse the police of attempting to bribe them to suppress the case. The incident, which occurred during the doctor’s night shift, has led to widespread protests demanding justice and swift action.
Allegations of Bribery and Cover-Up
The doctor was found dead on August 9 at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where she had been working. Her parents allege that from the outset, police efforts to manage the case were marred by attempts to close it quietly. According to them, they were initially prevented from viewing their daughter’s body and were forced to wait at the police station while it was taken for a post-mortem examination.
The father claimed, “Later, when the body was handed over to us, a senior police official offered us money to close the case, which we immediately declined.” This allegation of bribery has added fuel to the growing outrage surrounding the case.
Public and Political Outrage
The handling of the case by the Kolkata Police has faced severe criticism from both the public and political figures. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, reportedly had extensive access to various areas within the state-run hospital and was allegedly involved in illegal activities, such as arranging hospital beds and facilities for a price.
Protests have erupted across the city, with demonstrators carrying placards with slogans criticizing the police and highlighting the need for justice. Many of these placards emphasize the personal stakes involved, with messages reminding authorities of their own families.
Judicial and Legislative Actions
In response to the public outcry, the Calcutta High Court has ordered that the investigation be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On Monday, the CBI took a significant step by arresting Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, on charges of alleged financial misconduct related to the institution.
In a related legislative move, the West Bengal Assembly has passed a new anti-rape bill. This bill proposes capital punishment for perpetrators of rape if their actions lead to the victim’s death or leave her in a vegetative state, reflecting the heightened societal demand for stringent measures against sexual violence.
Continuing Protests and Demands for Justice
The protests continue as the public, alongside the family of the victim and junior doctors, demand a thorough and transparent investigation into the murder. The case has become a rallying point for broader calls for reforms in the handling of such crimes and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
The ongoing scrutiny of the case underscores the need for justice and reform in the face of serious allegations against those entrusted with maintaining public safety.
