Indian track and field athlete Simran Sharma secured her place in the semifinals of the women’s 200 meters T12 event at the Paris Paralympics by finishing first in her heat on Friday. The reigning world champion, Simran clocked a time of 25.41 seconds to top her heat and advance to the semifinals. According to the rules, the winner of each heat qualifies for Final A, and the top three runners in each semifinal will also advance to Final A.
The T12 category in the Paralympics is for athletes with visual impairments. Simran was born prematurely and spent the first 10 weeks of her life in an incubator, during which it was discovered that she was visually impaired. Simran’s coach is her husband, Gajendra Singh, who serves in the Indian Army Service Corps.
