- Haryana Assembly Dissolution: Haryana’s Governor, Bandaru Dattatreya, dissolved the state assembly 52 days ago, aiming to prevent a constitutional crisis. The last assembly session was held on March 12, and according to rules, there cannot be a gap of more than six months between sessions. As the six-month deadline was approaching on September 12, and due to elections, holding a new session was not feasible. This marks the first time in Haryana’s history that the assembly was dissolved to avoid a constitutional crisis. Previously, it had been dissolved early three times for elections.
- Army Officers Assault and Gangrape Case in Indore: A case of assault and gang rape involving two trainee army officers and their friend surfaced in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred on the night of September 10, when the officers went to visit Jamgate along with two women. Six accused attacked them, held them hostage, and demanded a ransom of 10 lakh rupees. Later, one of the women was allegedly gang-raped. The police have arrested three out of the six accused. The police released three conflicting statements about the incident:
- On Wednesday night, DIG Nimish Agrawal confirmed the gang rape.
- Later, Additional SP Rupesh Dwivedi stated that the woman denied the rape.
- On Thursday morning, SP Hitika Vasal registered the case based on suspicion raised by the officer involved.
- Mamata Banerjee’s Resignation Offer: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered to resign but stated she would not take action against protesting junior doctors. She had invited the doctors for a meeting at the Nabanna Secretariat, but they refused to attend, demanding a live telecast of the meeting, which the government did not agree to. The protest has been ongoing for 34 days at RG Kar Medical College, following a rape and murder case.
- CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury Passes Away: Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away at the age of 72. He was admitted to AIIMS Delhi on August 19 with pneumonia. After his death, his family donated his body to the hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, and several prominent leaders expressed their condolences. Yechury served as the CPI(M) General Secretary three times.
- Ban on Eyedrops Claiming to Help Read Without Glasses: The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has revoked the manufacturing and marketing license of an eyedrop named “Presvu,” produced by Entod Pharmaceuticals. The product claimed to help people with presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) read without glasses. The company had been promoting it as an over-the-counter (OTC) product, though it should only have been used with a doctor’s prescription. The DCGI halted its market release due to misleading advertising.
- Shimla Mosque Dispute: In Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, the mosque committee of the Sanjauli mosque has offered to remove illegal constructions in an effort to resolve the ongoing dispute. The committee met with the Shimla Municipal Corporation Commissioner and agreed to demolish the mosque’s illegal portions if ordered by the court. Meanwhile, there are demands to seal the three disputed floors of the mosque. This mosque is over 70 years old, and protests regarding it have been ongoing for 13 days.
- Astronauts’ Spacewalk: As part of SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission, two astronauts conducted a spacewalk at 700 kilometers above Earth. This was the first spacewalk conducted from a private spacecraft. The spacecraft traveled at a speed of 25,000 kilometers per hour, and the astronauts were outside for about 10 minutes. The mission was launched on September 10 and included four astronauts. It was the first time in 50 years that astronauts have been in this orbit.
