Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh — Tensions escalated in Bahraich following the death of 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra, who was killed during clashes related to a Durga idol immersion procession. The unrest has led to violent protests, property destruction, and a suspension of internet services in the area.
On Sunday, Mishra was shot while participating in the procession near Rehua Mansoor village. His death ignited a wave of anger among locals, prompting them to march in protest and block major roads, demanding justice. As crowds gathered for Mishra’s funeral, the situation deteriorated, resulting in clashes between protesters and police.
During the unrest, several shops and vehicles were set ablaze, and at least six people were injured due to stone-pelting and gunfire. In response, authorities have arrested three individuals and filed cases against six identified and 24 unidentified suspects for murder and other charges.
The Uttar Pradesh government has reacted by deploying senior officials, including Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta and ADGP (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash, to the region to restore order. In an effort to prevent further violence, internet services have been suspended across Bahraich.
Protests erupted at multiple locations, with demonstrators chanting slogans against police and calling for immediate action. Many participants refused to allow Mishra’s body to be cremated until justice was served, demanding a police encounter for those responsible.
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya emphasized that any attempts to disturb the peace would not be tolerated, while opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, criticized the government’s handling of the situation, expressing concern over the administration’s inaction.
The violence was reportedly triggered by a dispute over loud music being played during the procession, highlighting the sensitive nature of communal gatherings in the region. Local authorities have conducted flag marches in an attempt to reassure the public and maintain peace.
As the situation remains tense, residents and officials are calling for calm while awaiting further developments in the investigation into Mishra’s death.
