The Supreme Court of India’s YouTube channel has reportedly been hacked, with the platform now displaying videos promoting XRP, a cryptocurrency developed by Ripple Labs, a US-based company. The court has been using its channel to live-stream hearings, especially those before Constitution Benches and in cases of significant public interest.
One of the recent streams was of the suo motu case concerning the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder, which was broadcast live on the platform. However, it seems hackers have made many past hearings private.
Currently, the hacked channel is live-streaming a video titled “Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds To The SEC’s $2 Billion Fine! XRP PRICE PREDICTION.” Garlinghouse is the CEO of Ripple Labs, and the content appears to be part of a broader scam where hackers impersonate prominent figures or companies to promote fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes.
This is not an isolated incident. Ripple had previously sued YouTube for failing to curb similar scams, where official-sounding channels are used to dupe viewers into sending cryptocurrency in exchange for false rewards. Hackers often target successful YouTube accounts with large followings to push such schemes.
Supreme Court officials have confirmed that they are investigating the breach.
