On September 9, 2024, Infosys founder Narayana Murthy emphasized the crucial role of parental example in fostering a disciplined study environment for children. Speaking in Bengaluru after unveiling Paul Hewitt’s updated edition of Conceptual Physics, Murthy shared insights on parenting and education.
Leading by Example
Murthy highlighted that parents must create an environment conducive to studying by practicing what they preach. He recounted how he and his wife, Sudha, dedicated significant time each day to reading and studying with their children, Akshata and Rohan. They established a routine from 6:30 PM to 11 PM focused on study, during which television was banned.
“My wife’s approach was, if I am watching TV, I cannot ask my children to study. So, she decided to sacrifice her TV time and study with them,” Murthy explained. This practice set a strong example for the children and emphasized the importance of parental involvement in creating a disciplined study environment.
Views on Coaching Classes
Murthy also expressed skepticism about coaching classes, which have become a significant industry in India. He believes that coaching classes often arise from students not paying attention in class. “I don’t believe in coaching classes. They are often a sign that students are not fully engaging with their teachers,” he stated. He criticized the coaching industry, which is booming in India, for not addressing the root issues of classroom attention and parental competency.
Murthy’s insights reflect a broader discussion on the role of parental example and effective study practices in education. His comments underscore the importance of creating a supportive and disciplined home environment for children’s academic success.
