The state of Kerala is grappling with another Nipah virus outbreak, after a 24-year-old man from Malappuram district succumbed to the deadly disease. The confirmation came on September 15, 2024, following tests conducted by the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
The victim, a student residing in Bengaluru, had been admitted to a private hospital in Perinthalmanna with symptoms of hepatitis. His subsequent display of encephalitis raised suspicions of Nipah virus infection, leading to the collection and testing of serum samples.
The initial positive result received on September 14, 2024, prompted immediate action from health authorities. Following established Nipah protocol, 16 committees were formed and a comprehensive contact tracing effort commenced.
A total of 151 individuals were identified as primary contacts of the deceased. The victim’s travel history and interactions with numerous individuals at multiple hospitals fueled concerns about the potential spread of the virus.
To date, 151 individuals have been placed under observation, with five exhibiting mild symptoms and their samples sent for Nipah testing.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, district medical officer Dr. Renuka assured the public that the situation was under control. The health department is diligently tracing and observing individuals who may have come into contact with the victim.
This latest case marks the second Nipah virus death in Kerala in a short span. The death of a 14-year-old schoolboy in July 2024 had already triggered heightened vigilance and restrictions in affected areas.
As the state faces this renewed threat, health authorities are working tirelessly to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as they become available.
