IMPHAL: In response to escalating protests and unrest in the Imphal Valley, the Manipur Government has enforced a temporary ban on internet and mobile data services. The restriction, which includes a halt on broadband, VPNs, and other online communication tools, will be in place for five days, starting from 3 p.m. on September 10, 2024, and ending on 3 p.m. on September 15, 2024.
The Home Department’s order aims to address concerns about “anti-social elements” using social media to spread inflammatory content, hate speech, and false information that could incite public unrest. The government cited fears of potential loss of life, damage to property, and disturbances to public order as justification for the ban.
The order highlights the need to curb the spread of misinformation and false rumors through various digital platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The restrictions are intended to prevent the organization and mobilization of large groups that could lead to violent protests or property damage.
In addition to the internet ban, curfews have been imposed in three districts of Manipur. An indefinite curfew has been enforced in Imphal East and Imphal West, while prohibitory orders under Section 163 (2) of BNSS have been placed in Thoubal.
These measures are part of a broader effort to restore peace and maintain communal harmony in the region amid ongoing unrest and student protests demanding the restoration of order.
