The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with Abhijeet Mandal, a station house officer (SHO), for allegedly tampering with evidence related to the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor.
Ghosh was already in CBI custody for corruption allegations. The latest arrest adds charges of evidence tampering and obstruction of the investigation into the high-profile case that has garnered nationwide attention.
Key Details:
- Arrests and Charges: Sandip Ghosh, previously under investigation for corruption, and Abhijeet Mandal, SHO of Talla Police Station, have been arrested. Both are accused of trying to manipulate the investigation and destroy evidence.
- Previous Investigation: Sanjay Roy, a key suspect in the case, was arrested by Kolkata Police the day after the incident. Roy had been seen entering and exiting the seminar hall where the crime occurred, as captured by CCTV footage.
- Investigation Insights: The CBI discovered that Ghosh had ordered renovations in the seminar hall area on August 10, the day after the trainee doctor’s body was found. This renovation order, signed by Ghosh, is viewed as an attempt to interfere with the crime scene.
- Corruption Allegations: Ghosh has been previously accused of financial irregularities in RG Kar Medical College. The CBI’s investigation revealed several issues, including a questionable interview process for staff recruitment and irregularities in awarding tenders to certain companies.
- Additional Findings:
- Ghosh’s tenure involved a network of corruption with vendors, including issues with the awarding of tenders and management of biomedical waste.
- His former security guard, Biplab, was found to have connections with several companies that received hospital tenders, raising further questions about the integrity of the procurement process.
Response and Protests: The arrests follow protests by doctors demanding a live-streamed meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which was denied. Banerjee cited ongoing Supreme Court proceedings related to the RG Kar Medical College case as the reason for her decision.
The case continues to develop, with further scrutiny expected on the handling of the investigation and the broader implications of the alleged corruption.
