Kangana Ranaut Urges Farmers to Demand Return of Farm Laws

In a recent statement, BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut expressed her support for the now-repealed farm laws, suggesting that farmers should demand their reinstatement. This has sparked a strong reaction from the Congress party.

Sharing a clip of Kangana’s statement, the Congress took to X (formerly Twitter) and challenged the ruling party to reintroduce these controversial laws, which they referred to as “black laws.”

BJP MP Kangana Ranaut is advocating for the return of the three farm laws that were imposed on the farmers. After the sacrifice of over 750 farmers, the Modi government had to withdraw these laws. Now, BJP MPs are suggesting bringing them back. The Congress stands firmly with the farmers and will ensure that these black laws never return, no matter what Prime Minister Modi and his MPs attempt,” the party stated.

In the video, Ranaut acknowledged that her statement might be controversial and urged farmers themselves to call for the reinstatement of the farm laws.

Recent Controversies

  • Last month, Ranaut was reprimanded by her party for her comments comparing the farm laws agitation to the situation in Bangladesh, where former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign amid widespread protests.
  • In June, Ranaut faced backlash when a CISF woman constable allegedly slapped her at the Chandigarh airport, citing that her mother had been part of the farmers’ protest.

Background

The farm laws were introduced in September 2020 and led to a year-long blockade of Delhi’s borders by farmers. In November 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of these laws, apologizing to the nation for not being able to convince the farmers of their benefits.

Congress’s Stand

In its manifesto for the upcoming Haryana elections, the Congress has promised to introduce a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, addressing one of the major demands of the anti-farm laws movement. While most of the protestors were from Punjab, a significant number came from neighboring Haryana as well.
