India Reports First Mpox Case: Health Ministry Assures No Widespread Risk

India has confirmed its first case of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, with test results verifying the infection. The patient, a young male who recently traveled from a country with ongoing mpox transmission, has been isolated and is clinically stable. The strain identified is from the West African clade 2, similar to those in the 2022 outbreak, not the more severe strain currently reported globally.

The Union health ministry has emphasized that this case is isolated and not part of the global public health emergency related to the more virulent clade 1. Public health measures, including contact tracing and monitoring, are actively in place. The ministry has advised states to maintain vigilance without causing undue panic and to ensure preparedness at health facilities. The World Health Organization has recently declared the ongoing mpox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern due to rising cases in various countries.
