NEW DELHI, India has strongly condemned the abduction and brutal killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent Hindu leader from Bangladesh’s Biral sub-district, and has urged the interim government in Dhaka to take immediate measures to safeguard the rights of all minorities, reflecting ongoing tensions between the two nations over religious minority protection. Roy, a respected figure within the Hindu community, was abducted from his home on Thursday by four assailants on motorcycles, who reportedly beat him to death. This incident has sparked outrage in India, with New Delhi reiterating its concerns about the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly the Hindu community. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, condemned the killing in a social media post, calling it part of a broader pattern of “systematic persecution” of Hindus under Bangladesh’s interim government. He further emphasized the responsibility of the Bangladeshi government to ensure the protection of all minorities, including Hindus, without providing excuses or creating distinctions between different groups. "We condemn this horrific attack on Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, and once again call on the interim government to fulfill its duty to protect minorities," Jaiswal said, adding that perpetrators of similar crimes in the past had faced no consequences. This statement comes after tensions flared between India and Bangladesh over comments made by Bangladeshi officials regarding sectarian violence in West Bengal. Bangladesh's interim government had recently condemned the alleged attacks on Muslims in West Bengal and called on India to ensure the protection of its Muslim minority population. In response, Jaiswal criticized these remarks, urging Bangladesh to focus on its own record in protecting minorities, rather than making “unwarranted comments.” The strained diplomatic relations between the two countries have worsened since the interim government led by Yunus assumed power last August, following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid student-led protests. India has repeatedly raised concerns over the repression of Hindus in Bangladesh, calling for stronger measures to protect them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue directly with Yunus during a meeting at the Bimstec Summit in Bangkok earlier this month. Modi expressed India's concerns over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh and pressed for thorough investigations into incidents of violence against them.
