Shimla, September 5, 2024:
On Thursday, Hindu right-wing organizations organized a large-scale demonstration at Chaura Maidan near the Vidhan Sabha in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, calling for the demolition of what they allege to be an “illegal” mosque in Sanjauli.
Rumit Singh Thakur, President of the Dev Bhumi Shatriya Sangathan, mobilized supporters under the banner of “Sanatan unity.” He reported that people from across the state responded to his call, reflecting a strong show of community solidarity.
The protest followed an incident on September 1, when a businessman in Malyana, near Sanjauli, was allegedly attacked by individuals from the Muslim community. This incident spurred local residents to demand the demolition of a mosque in their area.
CONCERNS OVER INCOMING MIGRANTS
Thakur voiced concerns about a perceived influx of outsiders into Himachal Pradesh, urging the government to conduct thorough identity checks and trade registrations for new arrivals.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu addressed the situation, affirming that all state residents are entitled to equal rights and expressing respect for all religions. “While peaceful protests are allowed, we will not tolerate any actions that undermine the law,” Sukhu stated.
Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh noted that the mosque in question was constructed on government land and has been the subject of ongoing legal proceedings for 14 years.
Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh assured that there would be no leniency towards encroachers. “Everyone is subject to the law, and any actions taken will be in accordance with legal standards, whether by municipal authorities or the police,” he said.
