In connection with the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested former principal Dr. Sandeep Ghosh and the then Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tala police station, Abhijit Mandal, on Saturday. Both individuals are scheduled to be presented in the Sialdah court on Sunday.
Dr. Sandeep Ghosh is already in CBI custody, and the Enforcement Directorate has also initiated an investigation against him, leading to several raids. Ghosh has been remanded to judicial custody until September 23 in connection with financial irregularities. The arrest of the former principal, 36 days after the murder case emerged, has been met with mixed reactions from students and junior doctors. They welcomed the move as a step toward justice but questioned the delay of 35 days.
According to sources, Ghosh and Mandal were arrested for allegedly destroying evidence and misleading the investigation. The CBI had previously conducted a polygraph test on Ghosh. The Calcutta High Court had given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation into the RG Kar hospital murder case. The report is expected to be presented before the court on September 17.
