Fire Breaks Out at Tata Electronics Factory in Hosur; Investigation Underway

A fire broke out on September 28, 2024, at the Tata Electronics factory in Hosur, which manufactures components for Apple iPhones. Tamil Nadu officials announced on September 29 that a forensic investigation is expected to determine the cause of the fire.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the factory is unlikely to receive state permission to resume operations by September 30. Neither Tata Electronics nor Apple has provided comments outside regular business hours. However, Tata Electronics stated it is investigating the incident and will implement measures to ensure the safety of employees and stakeholders.

The fire originated in a chemical storage area, as confirmed by a fire official. District administrative official K.M. Sarayu reported that the blaze has been fully extinguished, and the fumes have dissipated. Two workers were hospitalized due to the incident but are expected to be discharged soon.

“We can now go in to investigate,” Mr. Sarayu added, mentioning that a forensic team from Chennai has been dispatched to examine the site.

It remains unclear whether the fire impacted any surrounding buildings, including one scheduled to start assembling iPhones by the end of the year. This incident is part of a troubling trend affecting Apple suppliers in India, where the company is seeking to diversify its supply chain beyond China, viewing the region as a key growth market.
