Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced on Monday a comprehensive ban on the production, sale, and use of all firecrackers, including green crackers, through January 1, 2025, as a measure to combat severe air pollution. The decision follows increased pollution levels during winter, exacerbated by firecracker emissions. Rai emphasized that this ban aims to safeguard public health and reduce environmental harm.
The ban will also cover online sales and deliveries of firecrackers. Rai encouraged residents to celebrate Diwali with traditional lamps and sweets instead. A coordinated enforcement plan involving the police, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the revenue department will be implemented to ensure compliance. This initiative is part of Delhi’s broader Winter Action Plan to address pollution, urging citizens to actively participate in environmental protection.
