Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has uncovered significant leads regarding the “influential nexus” linked to former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Principal Sandip Ghosh through his two mobile phones and laptops.
In addition to the devices, evidence has also been gathered from a desktop at Ghosh’s office at RG Kar College and from various paper documents seized during the investigation, sources familiar with the case reported.
The investigation has revealed a three-tier nexus in the financial scam at RG Kar. The first tier comprises politically influential patrons of Ghosh, who played a critical role in his alleged corrupt practices. Ghosh and his close associates represent the second tier, while the third tier involves contractors and suppliers closely associated with Ghosh.
Further investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also traced money trails that corroborate this three-tier structure. While the CBI’s inquiry is court-directed and monitored, the ED initiated its investigation following the filing of an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR).
Both agencies have identified a consistent pattern in the modus operandi of the scam, including manipulations within the tendering system for contracts, outsourcing infrastructure work to agencies instead of the state public works department, illegally selling biomedical waste on the open market, and smuggling organs from unidentified bodies in the hospital morgue.
Investigators have also uncovered the involvement of several shell companies used for money laundering, drawing parallels to similar cases in West Bengal, such as the school job scam and ration distribution issues.
