BSF Personnel Injured in Cross-Border Firing in Jammu’s Akhnoor

In a concerning development, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was injured in an unprovoked firing incident from across the International Border in Akhnoor, Jammu, early Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:35 a.m. when gunfire was reported from the Pakistani side of the border. The injured BSF constable, identified as Durba Jyoti Das, was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The BSF has responded to the firing with appropriate measures to safeguard the area.

Officials have confirmed that the BSF is on high alert to prevent any further escalation of the situation. This recent incident marks a rare ceasefire violation between India and Pakistan, especially given the renewed ceasefire agreement established on February 25, 2021.

The ceasefire agreement has largely held since its inception, with the last significant incident being the death of a BSF jawan in the Ramgarh sector last year—an unfortunate event that marked the first loss of life on the Indian side in over three years.

This latest violation occurs just days before the commencement of the assembly elections in Jammu, which are scheduled to begin with the first phase on September 18. The second and third phases are set for September 25 and October 1, respectively.
