New Delhi, Sep 9: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its call for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resign and face immediate arrest, citing recent Supreme Court hearings related to the RG Kar Medical College case.
In a press briefing at the party headquarters, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia condemned Banerjee for allegedly failing to uphold democratic values and for purportedly being involved in covering up the case. Bhatia claimed that the Supreme Court had questioned whether Banerjee should remain in her position during its recent hearings.
The BJP has argued that Banerjee’s resignation is necessary to ensure a fair investigation. They have also called for Banerjee to undergo a polygraph test to validate her statements and accused her of obstructing justice by allegedly protecting criminals and tampering with evidence.
Bhatia described the Supreme Court’s hearing on the RG Kar Medical College case, which lasted about two hours, as a significant embarrassment for Indian democracy. He accused Banerjee of siding with wrongdoers rather than supporting the victims and criticized her for not showing solidarity with the victim’s family. Bhatia also called for the dismissal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.
Additionally, the BJP has demanded the release of call records involving Banerjee, Goyal, and Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College. They have expressed dissatisfaction with the case’s handling, citing delays in filing the FIR, the expedited post-mortem, and insufficient CCTV footage.
Bhatia suggested that the controversy surrounding the case could lead to internal dissent within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), reflecting widespread frustration among the people of West Bengal and within the TMC leadership. This discontent may further destabilize the party and its position in the state.
