The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday following her claims that the Centre was conspiring to exacerbate the public outcry over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
The tragic incident, which occurred on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has led to widespread protests and is now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Banerjee alleged that the Centre, along with some Left parties, was involved in a conspiracy to manipulate the situation for political gain.
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla condemned Banerjee’s remarks as “shameful” and called for her resignation. He questioned the Chief Minister’s accusations, suggesting that they undermined the gravity of the situation and discredited the Supreme Court’s findings. The Supreme Court had criticized the delay in filing the FIR and noted concerns about the investigation process.
The Supreme Court’s hearing also highlighted issues with the investigation, including the absence of crucial documentation. It ordered the removal of the victim’s photographs from social media to protect her dignity and privacy.
In response to the criticism, Mamata Banerjee defended her position, denying any wrongdoing or attempts to profit from the tragedy. She stated that her government is supportive of any initiatives in the victim’s memory and accused the BJP of exploiting the situation for political purposes. Banerjee’s comments reflect the intense political and social tensions surrounding the case and the broader implications for state and national politics.
