Senior AAP leader Atishi took oath as the eighth chief minister of Delhi on Saturday, marking her as the city’s third woman CM after Sheila Dikshit and Sushma Swaraj. The oath was administered by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena at a ceremony in Raj Niwas.
Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony were Arvind Kejriwal, Atishi’s predecessor, Manish Sisodia, and other prominent AAP leaders. The event was attended by Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, and various BJP MPs.
Atishi’s Council of Ministers includes Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Imran Hussain, and Mukesh Ahlawat, a new member of the cabinet.
Although Atishi’s term will be brief, with assembly elections due in February, she has a demanding agenda ahead. The new government is tasked with reviving key infrastructure projects and flagship schemes that have faced delays due to the imprisonment of Kejriwal over the past five months.
South Delhi BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri called for the Atishi government to fulfill promises like reducing electricity and water bills, waiving property taxes in rural areas, and implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Delhi.
Atishi will also focus on delivering on the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, a scheme that promises Rs 1,000 honorarium to eligible women in the city. The new government has only a few months to address pressing issues related to basic services, including roads, water supply, and healthcare.
