A railway employee was beaten to death after being accused of molesting an 11-year-old girl on board the Humsafar Express

NEW DELHI: A railway employee was beaten to death after being accused of molesting an 11-year-old girl on board the Humsafar Express from Barauni, Bihar, to New Delhi. The man was reportedly beaten to death by the girl’s family and outraged passengers.

The incident began late Wednesday night when a family from Siwan boarded the train. Around 11:30 pm, Group D railway employee Prashant Kumar allegedly made the 11-year-old girl sit with him and took advantage of her mother’s brief absence to molest her.

Upon learning of the incident from her daughter, the mother alerted her husband, father-in-law, and other passengers in the M1 (AC III tier economy) coach. As the train pulled into Aishbagh junction in Lucknow, the accused was confronted and severely beaten by the agitated crowd. The assault continued until the train reached Kanpur Central, approximately 90 minutes later.

At Kanpur Central, Government Railway Police (GRP) officials took custody of Kumar and transported him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on arrival.

Both the girl’s family and Kumar’s family have filed separate complaints—one for sexual assault and the other for murder. Kumar’s uncle, Pawan, from Samastpur village in Muzaffarpur district, expressed disbelief over the allegations and raised questions about the Railway Police Force’s absence during the prolonged assault.

“Prashant was not capable of such a thing. It seems like he was targeted as part of a conspiracy. How could he be beaten for so long without any intervention from the Railway Police?” Pawan questioned.

GRP Superintendent of Police (Prayagraj), Abhishek Yadav, recounted the events leading to Kumar’s death. “After the girl reported the molestation, her family and other passengers assaulted the accused. He was handed over to the GRP at Kanpur Central and subsequently taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead,” Yadav said.

Authorities are investigating both the sexual assault allegations and the fatal beating, seeking to unravel the precise sequence of events and determine responsibility for the tragic outcome.
