Kolkata: A 2017 report from the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post has resurfaced, accusing an Indian orthopaedic surgeon, identified as Sandip Ghosh, of inappropriate conduct involving a male student nurse. The allegations detail an incident where the surgeon allegedly touched the complainant inappropriately during a visit to Hong Kong. The report has sparked widespread discussion, particularly on social media, as it went viral on Monday.
It remains unclear whether the Sandip Ghosh mentioned in the report is the same person as the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The West Bengal Orthopaedic Association has acknowledged the viral report, stating they are “looking into the matter.”
The incident reportedly took place while the surgeon was demonstrating a medical procedure. According to the complaint, Ghosh allegedly patted the student nurse’s hip and attempted to touch his private parts, later asking, “Do you like it?” In his defense, the surgeon claimed the touch was accidental, attributing it to a misunderstanding while showing how to treat a dislocated shoulder.
Members of the West Bengal Orthopaedic Association have mentioned knowing about a “legal issue” that Ghosh had faced abroad but refrained from commenting further until more details are verified.
The case has reignited discussions on professional ethics and misconduct within the medical community, though no formal conclusion has been reached regarding Ghosh’s involvement in the incident.
