Tragedy in Gurugram: Woman Killed by Live-in Partner Over Suspected Affair

In a case that has sent shockwaves through Gurugram, police on Monday arrested a man for allegedly murdering his live-in partner, driven by suspicion of infidelity. The woman's decomposed body was found wrapped in a blanket in a wheat field last month, and the arrest brings grim closure to a tragic mystery that had lingered for over 50 days.
The victim, identified as Rita (name changed), originally hailed from Bihar. According to police and family statements, she had been estranged from her husband of 11 years and had been living in Naharpur village with a man identified as Shivshankar Sharma alias Kalicharan, a labourer from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. The two had been in a live-in relationship for nearly five years.
Rita’s father, who reported her missing, last saw her on February 23 — the same day police believe she was murdered. “I came to meet her that day. We spoke, and everything seemed normal,” he said in his statement. Unbeknownst to him, it would be the last time he would see his daughter alive.
Her body was discovered on March 11, abandoned in a field, severely decomposed and unrecognizable. For 20 days, her identity remained a mystery until her father identified her on March 31. A murder case was subsequently registered at the Manesar Police Station.
Following a thorough investigation, police zeroed in on Sharma, who was taken into custody on April 14. During interrogation, officials say he confessed to the crime, claiming that jealousy and suspicion over an alleged affair led him to kill Rita. He then allegedly wrapped her body in a blanket and dumped it in the field.
"Sharma admitted that he and Rita were in a live-in relationship. He suspected she was seeing someone else and, in a fit of rage, killed her," said a Gurugram Police spokesperson. "He will be produced in court and taken into police remand for further investigation."
Rita worked at a private company in IMT Manesar, while Sharma took up daily wage labour to sustain their life together.
This case has once again highlighted the dark side of domestic relationships and the often unchecked violence that can erupt from mistrust and possessiveness. Advocates have stressed the need for better mechanisms to support women in vulnerable domestic situations, especially those estranged from their families.
As investigations continue, Rita’s family is demanding swift justice. "She didn't deserve this. All she wanted was to live in peace. We hope her killer faces the law in full measure," said her grieving father.
The incident adds to a disturbing trend of intimate partner violence in India, a societal issue that remains prevalent and frequently underreported.
